BPF Party Draws Final Outcomes on Registration
12:00, 04/02/2003

BPF party drew final conclusions on their member’s registration as candidates for the deputies in the local councils. As said at the specially convened press-conference by the leader of the party Vintsuk Vyachorka, out of 154 candidates, nominated by the BPF party, they registered 107; denied registration to 43, while the destiny of another four nominees is unclear. According to Vyachorka, such results came as no surprise to the party’s leadership and were quite predictable, for the authorities did their best to prevent democrats from penetrating into the local council’s composition.

As pinpointed by Vintsuk Vyachorka, the Belarusian Popular Front’s candidates were denied registration on trumped-up grounds. The most popular motive of all was on grounds of improperly filled out income and tax declarations.

The leaders of parties are readying to see less of their candidates surviving till the end of the race. “We harbor no illusion that all of them will reach the end of the electoral campaign,” – said Vyachorka. In his opinion, the remaining candidates from the BPF party will be used by the authorities to solve a twofold task: create an illusion of democratic elections and draw the voters to the ballot stations.
