Congress of Belarusan intelligentsia was postponed on March :: Charter'97 :: News

Administration of Palace of Republic refused to give hall to organizers of Congress of Belarusan intelligentsia that was planned on February, 16. Because of this reason organizers decided to postpone the Congress on March. It has already been proposed 300 delegates on Congress.

On February, 5 administration of Palace of Republic informed organizers that large hall has already been rented by theater “Virtuosoes of stage” for performance “The innkeeper”. So, it is impossible to carry out Congress in the hall. But organizers of the Congress are doubt that it is the only reason of refuse.

Firstly when we appealed to administration of Palace of Republic we were told that the decision will be made by administration of Lukashenko. We were not told that the hall is reserved, -- said co-chairman of organizing committee Vladimir Kolos to Radio “Liberty”.

Alexey Marochkin sais that the refusal was predictable.

- I personally talked to Korendo – this person is the leading ideologist near president. He said: “I don’t support Congress of Belarusan intelligentsia. You lead society to split”. I said that our society is so split already, that it is time to gather.

Similar reasons of refusal were in other halls of capital. Organizers were able to achieve agreement with one of them only on March.

In opinion of organizers they will have time to get prepared to Congress more carefully: send invitations to official structures (ministries, universities, courts), provide wide representation of regions.
