European Parliament Passes Resolution on Trade Unions’ Rights Violations in Belarus 12:04, 13/02/2003
At its regular session in Strasbourg the European Parliament passed resolution in support of the call of the International Confederation of free trade unions to conduct investigation into trade unions’ rights violations in Belarus and, if need be, to exclude this country from the EU general system of preferences.
The EP resolution on the relations between EU and Belarus contains their call to the Belarusian authorities “to respect trade unionists’ rights, especially the right for associations, guaranteed by the ILO convention, which had been ratified by Belarus”.
The Parliament called on the EU executive body – the European Commission – to embark on an official investigation, pondering the possibility of suspending Belarus’ status in the system of trade preferences. The system, as you know, establishes tariffs and all sorts of privileges in trade transactions of third countries with the EU.
