Lukashenko to Build Atomic Station on Territory of Belarus 11:53, 17/02/2003
Alexander Lukashenko deems it necessary to build atomic energy stations on the country’s soil. RIA “Novosti” correspondent reports that speaking on Friday before the students of the radio-technical university Lukashenko said the following (quote): “Its construction (meaning the atomic power station) would be one of the cornerstones of the country’s independence and sovereignty, especially in the energy sphere”.
Meantime, the head of state reassured everyone that they would not do anything without preliminarily consulting the population.
As pointed out by Lukashenko, there’s a Chernobyl syndrome in the country, caused by the tragedy, which, he added, has to be overcome in the future.
Belarus is located in the “atomic circle”, according to the head of state, “while we, having no resources of our own, are made dependent on the foreign suppliers”.
