AI Group Rings Alarm Bells Over Lack of Progress in Investigation of Disappearances 16:35, 18/02/2003
Amnesty International group from Nootdorp of Netherlands addressed president Lukashenko with a regular letter, pointing out lack of investigation into the politically-motivated disappearances in Belarus. Following you may read the original text of the letter:
“Dear President,
The last news about the interferences of the authorities of Belarus with the well known disappearances is that the investigation after these facts has been halted. The most important comment came from the persons most concerned: they were not surprised.
We all know that all the efforts of the relatives of the disappeared persons to find out something about their beloved ones were fruitless because of the unwillingness of the authorities to cooperate and their strong wish to hide the truth.
And till now the illusion has been maintained as if there worked some investigation group. We all know that what was done did not al all deserve the name of a thorough and impartial investigation.
But now we have to understand that the authorities of Belarus don’t even want to maintain the illusion as if they are willing to do justice in these cases. If those responsible would be brought to justice, what persons should then be concerned?
We are convinced that some day or another the truth will become known. Perhaps by the efforts of the investigation group of PACE?
We hope that there will soon be a better time for justice in your country. And that you will be willing to welcome that better time.
