Regime’s Oblivious Says Aleksei Marochkin 11:30, 18/02/2003
Desecration of the Minsk military communal graveyard (1914-1918) testifies to the vandalistic treatment by the Belarusian authorities of the nation’s historic past, said prominent Belarusian artist Aleksei Marochkin at the February 14 press-conference, which the public held on the territory of the cemetery.
At present they are doing excavation and engineer construction works, laying down the cables for the near-by living bloc, reports BelaPAN. Deputy chair of the Minsk society for historic and cultural objects’ protection Vladimir Denisov said that the graveyard was opened upon the decision of the Russian imperial government in 1914 for burying the Russian Orthodox soldiers, which perished during the 1st World War. Moreover, according to the documents, they also buried there in 1941-1942 the Soviet war captives.
“Now as a result of the construction works on the territory of 150 square meters they desecrated and unearthed to the surface a great number of human remains”, said Denisov. Deputy of the “house of representative” general Valery Frolov said that the incident testifies to the prevailing material values over the moral ones in the country. He pledged that the deputies would study the fact in detail and file a concomitant complaint on the matter to the supreme state bodies.
