Freedom Day Festivities’ Plan Outlined 16:40, 18/02/2003
This year the Freedom Day, marked on March 25, will see street actions, art exhibition, solemn meeting of the public, concert, literature readings and scholarly conference. The schedule of events was announced at the February 17 press-conference by professor Anatoly Gritskevich, member of the national organizing committee for celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic. At the moment they are negotiating with the political parties and official representatives. Gritskevich underscored that 8 out of 10 parties, to which the organizing committee forwarded the documents, already consented to uphold festive events of the jubilee year.
“All talks, which are being held now under the banner of the organizing committee, are called to consolidate the society. Belarus unites all of us, who live here,” – said deputy chairman of the organizing committee, poet Sergei Zakonnikov: “Negotiations, which are currently underway, are aimed at attracting all spectrum of people to them, who would work out a brief, precise and dynamic appeal to the whole of the Belarusian population. We want this appeal to be signed by a thousand prominent Belarusians, not only intelligentsia.
The popular Belarusian artist Zinaida Bondarenko, who also engaged in the press-conference, underlined this: “We got to encourage the nation by this holiday. Last year I was honored to lead a festive concert and, hopefully, this year I will also manage to make my little contribution into the celebration of the BPR’s jubilee”.
