Lukashenko Displeased with Law-Enforcement Structures 16:41, 18/02/2003
There is none nor there can be any uncontrollable bodies of power, said, according to officially informed sources, Alexander Lukashenko at the February 18 meeting, dedicated to the evaluation of the police work over the past year. The head of state noted that back in the past the law-enforcement structures had been considered untouchable. Things shouldn’t be that way, though, he said.
As underscored by the Belarusian leader, today there emerge new, untraditional threats, posed to the national, public and personal security of citizens, which requires a totally new style of work on part of the law-enforcement bodies, as well as the higher quality of their activities. As deemed by the head of state, they oftentimes fail to react to the negative tendencies in the society on good time.
Lukashenko pinpointed that “things are even worse in the sphere of fighting economic criminality”. “Only 40% of the criminal lawsuits are being forwarded to the court, while every fifth of them gets suspended,” – emphasized the head of state. He also added that he intends to most seriously question the leaders of the law-enforcement structures on the fulfillment of his directive “On measures to intensify struggle with corruption”, and said that in the future the country’s law-enforcers will always be under the control of the government.
