Saddam Hussein Set to Pay Visit to Lukashenko
11:11, 19/02/2003

Iraqi ambassador in Belarus Salman Zeidan didn’t rule out a possibility of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s trip to Minsk, of which he spoke on February 18 during the press-conference in Minsk, dedicated to the latest situation developments around Iraq. Salman Zeidan emphasized that Hussein will visit Minsk in no time after his official invitation to do so by the Belarusian leadership.

When inquired by Radio Ratsya whether or not the Iraqi president may one day apply for political asylum in Belarus, ambassador Salman Zeidan said the following:

- If you only knew our president, you wouldn’t be asking that. Our president Saddam Hussein is just like president Lukashenko. A great, courageous, modest person and real man indeed. He is no coward, as many who don’t dare say a word against the US war threat. Saddam Hussein has been fighting for his nation for 45 long years. He’s our soul, our heavens and he doesn’t know any other place under the skies, except Iraq. I’d be glad if they held personal official meeting with Lukashenko. That’s my greatest desire as an ambassador.

And they will surely rendezvous one day. Lukashenko will head for Iraq, while our president will travel to Minsk. That’s a true interaction and mutual understanding between our countries. He will gladly come to Belarus, once he gets invitation. This will happen in one month, one year or two years’ time. President Saddam Hussein is a true man. When the WTC towers were ruined where was Bush? He wasn’t in his working cabinet but in a hiding. Saddam Hussein during the US military threat in 1991 joined his people in the streets. Yesterday I saw Lukashenko skiing and crowds gathering around to praise him. It gave me pleasure to see that happening. And I told everyone in Minsk – that’s the kind of president we need. He’s a Saddam Hussein indeed.
