Aleksei Marochkin: People’s March Means People’s Activism 15:29, 21/02/2003
Distinguished Belarusian artist, deputy chairman of the “Pagonya” association Aleksei Marochkin stated his support to the People’s March “For Better Life!”, due to take place in Belarus on March 12. “I assume that the social-economic situation of our country touches upon every individual, including artists and other intelligentsia. I know that my colleagues, professors of the Belarusian arts academy, receive miserable wages. And so I’m calling on everyone to uphold the People’s March under the motto “For Better Life!”, said Marochkin in an interview to Charter’s press-center.
- You supported the People’s March idea and the rally will be held under social-economic slogans. But you are an artist and artists usually don’t think too much of reality, living in somewhat their own ideal world…
- I guess, the social-economic condition of our country has to do with every individual today, artists being no exception. For when a painter wants to draw pictures, he oftentimes sells them. But if the client has no money even to buy bread and milk, will he go buy the paintings? I know that my colleagues from the Belarusian arts academy have miserable wages. And so I’m calling on everyone to uphold the People’s March “For Better Life!”
- Some believe that the People’s March may hinder celebration of the 85th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic. Does such a problem exist?
- I believe it is concocted by those, who look at themselves in Belarus, rather than at Belarus in themselves. No rally can disrupt BPR’s jubilee. On the contrary, it may bring people back to their feelings.
