Ludmila Gryaznova: Corruption Can’t be Fought Against by Repressions Alone
15:54, 24/02/2003

On February 22 Kiev staged a founding conference of the East-European department of the universal organization “Parliamentarians versus corruption”. Belarus was represented there by 13th Supreme Soviet deputy, Charter’97 human rights coordinator Ludmila Gryaznova.

Ludmila Gryaznova delivered her speech at the conference and mentioned the peculiarities of national strife with corruption. The text of the report read that although corruption is a serious social disease, from which all post-Soviet states now suffer, one can’t fight it only by means of repressions.

“Alexander Lukashenko, who took the office on an anti-corruption wave, became the most corrupt official of all – he controls economic sectors and most lucrative businesses in the country, leading his nation further towards misery. Authoritarian regime and repressions don’t solve corruption problem, but deepen it instead. The final victory can be claimed only via democratic transformations,” – said Ludmila Gryaznova at the conference.
