Grodno Oppositionists Concentrate on Freedom Day
15:47, 24/02/2003

Representatives of public and political organizations of Grodno disseminated an appeal in connection with the forthcoming street rallies in Minsk. The authors of the appeal called on opposition representatives to give up an idea of holding demonstrations in March and rather concentrate on preparing one massive action instead.

The text of the statement was signed by representatives of Grodno affiliates of the Belarusian Social-Democratic Gromada, BPF “Adradjenne”, Young Front, Belarusian Helsinki Committee, public association “Lev Sapega foundation”. BelaPAN reports that the authors of the appeal tend to think that holding People’s March on March 12 under social mottos and BPR anniversary rally will “ produce an illusion as if demands of independence, democracy and decent life are different phenomena, not interrelated between each other”.

Representatives of the democratic organizations of Grodno are convinced that “preservation of the Belarusian independence and installation of strong democracy are prerequisites for the solution of most our social-economic problems”. The authors of the text call on both groups of organizers of rallies to pass a mutually acceptable scenario of holding one common street rally in March and concentrate on the traditional Freedom Day.
