Foreign Journalist Denied Accreditation to Monitor Ballot 11:50, 03/03/2003
The Foreign Ministry of Belarus denied accreditation to the journalist of the Slovak newspaper “SME” Lubomir Gombosh, who was supposed to visit Belarus to highlight the elections into the local councils. The journalist was notified about that decision on Friday, January 28 in a phone conversation with the representative of the Foreign Ministry’s press-service.
This wasn’t the first accreditation refusal, received by Gombosh: the first time he faced similar situation was in September 2001 in the aftermath of the presidential ballot. The formal reason for that refusal was his alleged violation of administrative law.
Lubomir Gombosh was accredited with the Belarusian Foreign Ministry in 2000 and has been regularly preparing since then the Belarusian news updates for the Slovak weekly “SME”. Moreover, he cooperates with the Czech newspapers “Pravo” and “Lidova Noviny”, being an official observer in Belarus for the Czech weekly “Respekt” and “Tyden”, as well the Slovak weekly “Dominoforum”.
