Baghdad Mayor: Belarus, Iraq Badly Need Each Other 15:40, 05/03/2003
The development of relations with Belarus is one of the top priority directions of the Iraqi foreign policy, said the mayor of Baghdad Adnan Abed Khamed during his March 5 meeting with the heads of the Minsk city hall. “Iraq openly and enthusiastically treats its relations with Belarus. That decision belongs to Saddam and it’s a high-level decision,” – stated Khamed. He underscored that it is high time they considered the issue of the Belarusian goods’ promotion to Iraq. “You need us and we need you badly too,” – stressed the Baghdad mayor.
In Minsk the high guest intends to meet with the Belarusian experts in drain water utilization, sewerage system and asphalt manufacture. According to him, in Baghdad with the population of over 5 million residents, there exist problems with pure drinking water supplies. As a result of “ruthless and unfair blockade the new sources of water haven’t been discovered since 1990,” – bitterly complained Adnan Abed Khamed.
Upon the termination of their meeting Khamed told the journalists that in case of the possible war actions, Baghdad’s city hall will cater for the population’s regular needs, as well as pass out arms and ammunition to the city dwellers in expectation of military invasion of the city. “We will fight, based on our firm conviction to protect our homeland and national dignity, realizing that justice is on our side. Iraqi nation is a freedom-loving nation and will prefer to die, protecting their home country,” – declared Adnan Abed Khamed.
