"Respublika" MPs Set to Sophisticate Electoral Law
11:22, 07/03/2003

Representatives of the deputies’ faction “Respublika” intend to bring up for consideration of the “parliament’s” spring session the law “On sophistication of the electoral system of the Republic of Belarus”, said deputy Frolov at the press-conference, hosted on March 6 in Minsk. The electoral amendments, proposed by the faction, include introduction of the mixed majority-proportionate system of voting, ban on the early voting and prohibition of the officials’ prolongation of office term.

Participants of the press-conference, members of the “Respublika” Valery Frolov, Vladimir Parfenovich and “parliamentarian” Vladimir Novosyad, paid attention to the electoral falsification facts, recorded by them in course of the local elections campaign. They submitted the concomitant complaint to the Minsk city hall, enumerating all the occurred abuses, attaching there the protocols of the district commissions and also the protocol of the meeting of the Leninsky district of Minsk’s electoral commission.

On March 6 the city commission for elections satisfied the complaint of the “deputies” and ruled to re-count the votes in the electoral constituency #9.

As noted by Parfenovich, “the revealed violations in this district alone manifest that elections into the local councils were in no wise open and free”.
