Bandazhevsky Proclaimed Honorary Paris Citizen 16:09, 11/03/2003
A few days ago the city hall of Paris for the first time ruled to endow a Belarusian national with an “honorary citizen of Paris” title – the former rector of the Gomel State Institute of medicine professor Yuri Bandazhevsky, who’s currently serving his term in the hard labor colony #1 in Belarus.
Unprecedented decision-making by the French capital’s city hall became possible owing to the activists of the movement “For Yuri Bandazhevsky’s liberation”, which many of the Frenchmen joined. Deputies of the Council of Paris unanimously voted in favor of the decision.
The text of the decision, cited by “BDG”, reads this: “A few months ago the town authorities of Clermont-Ferran ruled to recognize this prominent Belarusian scholar as their town’s honorary citizen. Similar decision, if taken by the Paris city hall, could well help liberate Yuri Bandazhevsky or at least soften his detention conditions, which endanger the health of this prisoner of conscience.”
Judging by the results of the voting, the Paris deputies tend to believe that their opinion will be heard in Belarus and the title of the honorary Paris citizen will usher in soon changes in the fate of the famous Belarusian researcher Yuri Bandazhevsky.
