UCP Condemns Arrest of People’s March Protesters
16:06, 13/03/2003

Today the United Civil Party circulated its statement in connection with administrative arrests, passed against the initiators and organizers of the People’s March “For Better Life!”. Following read its text:

“The Belarusian citizens have a right for silence, miserable wages, overcrowded public transport, payment for free medicine and education.

However, practice shows that they have no right to publicly protest against price-growth, poverty, corruption, lawlessness, uncontrolled waste of the state means.

In breach of the art.2,21,35 of the Belarusian Constitution the authorities forbade to organize the People’s March “For Better Life!” on March 12. Dozens of citizens were violently ill-treated by the police.

The law-enforcers apprehended leaders of Charter’97 Andrei Sannikov, Dmitry Bondarenko, members of the UCP Political Council – Charter’97 activist Ludmila Gryaznova and co-chairman of the “Private property” Leonid Malakhov.

The United Civil Party decisively protests against the violation of constitutional rights of the Belarusian nationals. One can’t win people’s trust and confidence through repressions.

UCP draws the attention of law-enforcers and the judiciary to the priority of the Constitution before the decrees and orders.

UCP calls on the international community and Belarusian citizens to express solidarity with the detainees and those, who stood trial – Sannikov, Gryaznova, Malakhov and Bondarenko. Any attempts to threaten active people who care for their country will fail anyway. Serious changes occurred in public mentality. The overwhelming majority of the country’s citizens don’t support the policy of the ruling regime. History proves that one cannot rule with truncheons, deceit and propagandistic TV programs.”

Statement circulated by UCP press-service
