Zakharenko’s Case Full of Mystery 13:38, 14/03/2003, Oleg Volchek, `Narodnaya Volya`
As the press reported before the mother of the missing ORT cameraman Dmitry Zavadsky petitioned the court over the illicit actions of the procuracy, which refused to present her a copy of the ruling on the halt of investigation into her son’s involuntary disappearance. Such destiny now befell the criminal lawsuit into Zakharenko’s vanishing case too.
On January 24, 2003 I visited the head of the procuracy’s investigation department of Minsk Mr.Sinyak. I asked to be given a copy of the ruling on the termination of preliminary investigation.
During our conversation the senior procuracy detective Chumachenko (in charge of the case) entered the door and started yelling at me for no reason. He tried to punch me but thanks to Sinyak’s intervention, we managed to escape a fight.
I decided that by his arbitrary actions Chumachenko inflicted moral damage upon both me and the family of Zakharenko. After we discussed the incident, we determined to write a plea to dismiss Chumachenko from his senior detective’ post in the disappearance case.
Minsk city prosecutor Kulik responded that my arguments about Chumachenko’s inadequate conduct found no confirmation. They also refused to give me a copy of the document I requested. Truly speaking, I never expected anything different from them. However, I’m still worried by the following question. Why are the prosecutors so indifferent to the fate of the missing? Why are they treating so aggressively any criticism by the relatives of the disappeared, who are displeased with their inertia and passiveness? For how long should we wait for an answer about the destiny of Yuri Zakharenko, Viktor Gonchar, Anatoly Krasovsky and Dmitry Zavadsky.
As an attorney of Olga Zakharenko I addressed Belarusian procuracy and Supreme court in hope that there might be some brave and honest people there, who would explain to me all mysteries, hidden in both civil and criminal cases.
The family of Zakharenko addresses all citizens, especially those, who helped look into the causes of the abduction. The family members don’t believe that with the current regime retaining grip on power they will ever learn the destiny of former Interior Minister Yuri Zakharenko. So they plead with you to present any data, which could possibly shed light on the disappearance cases.
