ZUBR Movement’s Statement
11:43, 14/03/2003

On March 12, 2003 Alexander Lukashenko demonstrated his fear before peaceful protest of the Belarusian nation, as well as helplessness before people’s personal courage. Driven to poverty and looted by the regime, they took to the streets at the People’s March “For Better Life!” under social slogans and demanded resignation of Lukashenko and his government. Over 100,000 individual entrepreneurs in dozens of Belarusian towns upheld Minsk action through a countrywide strike.

The regime threw riot police and interior forces to suppress peaceful protesters. They incarcerated famous Belarusians, People’s March organizers – Andrei Sannikov, Ludmila Gryaznova, Dmitry Bondarenko and Leonid Malakhov – who demanded reduction of public utilities tariffs, rise of salaries, pensions and stipends and improvement of entrepreneurial conditions.

ZUBR movement reminds to the law-enforcers, KGB, procuracy and judges about their responsibility for violating Constitution and laws, infringement on people’s rights and freedoms, passage of trumped-up sentences and crimes against humanity.

Before our very eyes they brought down dictatorships in Europe and the citizens of those countries condemned everyone, who cracked down on law during the years of dictatorial rule. Many policemen and judges in the former Yugoslavia paid dearly for their crimes against the nation, committed during Slobodan Milosevic’s governance. Just think of it! Who are you with? With the nation or Europe’s last dictator?

ZUBR movement demands immediate release of the organizers of peaceful action of protest and fulfill the demands, laid out in resolution, passed by the participants of the People’s March “For Better Life!”, draw to accountability the officials, who violated the Constitution of Belarus, responsible for the violation of citizens right for the freedom of assemblies, street rallies and demonstrations, as well as the judges, who passed criminal verdicts against March’s organizers.

Let’s stay together and Belarus will be free!
