USA Occupy Top Spot in Direct Foreign Investments to Belarus
11:41, 09/04/2003

Over the years of independence the Belarusian economy attracted $25bln of capital investments, in which $4bln stands for the foreign investments.

As stressed by the director of the department for investments of the Belarusian Economy Ministry Valery Drozd, speaking before the participants of the Belarusian-American business-symposium, these figures testify to the fact that “the formation of capital investments is viewed in Belarus as the national process, while the foreign investments are given additional catalytic role in strengthening the country’s industrial and economic potential”.

Meantime, Drozd reported that on the country’s territory there currently operate over 5thsd registered companies with foreign capital, which represent above 80 states of the globe. The United States, by the way, come first in the volume of direct deposits into the statutory funds of joint ventures, operating at the Belarusian market. “This amounts to around 20% of the general size of the statutory capital,” – pinpointed the department’s director. He also emphasized that there are over 520 commercial companies in Belarus with the US capital, while the volume of direct US investments into Belarus constitutes around $100mln, having increased over the year 2002 by 35%.
Drozd said that apart from the USA, other main economic investors are Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Austria, Cyprus and Sweden. Meantime, he noted, the foreign investors are mostly attracted to investing their monies into car-building, metal-procession, food, light, chemical and wood-processing industries, as well as trade, communications, transport and medicine.
