Belarusian Nationals Can’t Serve in Russia’s Ranks 11:31, 29/04/2003
Ahead of the Dushanbe summit within the framework of the Treaty on collective defense, the Russian government approved the proposals of the Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov to accept CIS member-states’ citizens to serve in the Russian troops. On serving for three years in the Russian army, the foreigners, on the basis of their contract, will manage to receive Russian citizenship. This provision is also pending for the Belarusian nationals.
Radio Svaboda reports that certain representatives of the official Minsk positively perceived this news. Chairman of the Commission for national security of the “house of representatives” Boris Bikkinin, for instance, said that after the army reform in Belarus our best military specialists, particularly in the military space sphere, remain out of work. According to what he said, the Russian innovation will help make use of the Belarusian potential.
