Police didn’t sanction May 19 entrepreneurs’ rally in the Lenin’s square in central Grodno. Around 50 assembled at the appointed time in the square. The protesters came without flags or banners, nor produced any speeches. Instead they decided to silently protest against the regime’s economic policy. However, literally ten minutes later there showed up some 20 law-enforcers in the company of 4 riot policemen. Saying via the loudspeaker that the assembly is unsanctioned, they started ousting the crowd to the city park, located near the square. They demanded some to present their passports and threatened with accountability.

Minsk authorities allowed the Belarusian trade union of car-building and agricultural machinery to hold their meeting in the city on May 22, reads the letter, which deputy head of the Minsk city hall Mikhail Petrushin sent on May 16 to the leader of the trade union Alexander Bukhvostov. Referendum on the formation of the “union state” of Russia and Belarus may occur in November-December, 2003. “Rosbalt” correspondent quotes the secretary of the union Pavel Borodin as saying that at the Friday meeting with the journalists of the “Literaturnaya Gazeta”.
