Police Bans Entrepreneurial Protest

Police didn’t sanction May 19 entrepreneurs’ rally in the Lenin’s square in central Grodno. Around 50 assembled at the appointed time in the square. The protesters came without flags or banners, nor produced any speeches. Instead they decided to silently protest against the regime’s economic policy. However, literally ten minutes later there showed up some 20 law-enforcers in the company of 4 riot policemen. Saying via the loudspeaker that the assembly is unsanctioned, they started ousting the crowd to the city park, located near the square. They demanded some to present their passports and threatened with accountability.

In spring this year the Belarusian State Pedagogical University had its rector replaced. The new appointee – Petr Dmitrievich Kukharchik – imposed new rules, many of which cannot be called democratic at all. For instance, at the department of the Belarusian philology and culture (and not only them) during the spring opposition rallies they announced total check-up of those present at lectures and seminars: a day prior to the action, on the day of event and the following day.

Naumov Calls For Cooperation Development with Iran

Vladimir Naumov, Belarus’ Interior Minister, during his meeting with the Iranian ambassador in Minsk Golpaigani called for an extension of bilateral cooperation in different spheres. The head of the Belarusian police, having passed an official invitation onto the Iranian Interior Minister to pay visit to Minsk, stated readiness on his part to fruitfully cooperate with Iran.

BAJ Takes Alexander Ignatouk’s Side

Public association “Belarusian Association of Journalists” passed a statement, noting that it “considers inadmissible to use the articles of the Penal code against journalists”. The reason for the passage of this statement was the institution of legal action against founder and editor-in-chief of the newspapers “Vecherny Stolin” and “Provintsialka” Alexander Ignatouk.

"Novaya Gazeta Smargoni" Fails to Find Publisher

Founder of the “Novaya Gazeta Smargoni” Romuald Ulan cannot find publisher for its further issue, BelaPAN quotes him as saying. According to the founder, the newspaper’s publication has been halted and it is hardly possible to find publisher in the near future.

On May 17 in Mogilev at the entrance to the Palace of culture of the artificial tissues manufacture plant, there commenced his hunger-strike a resident of the Zimnitsa village of Mogilev district Pavel Krushkin. By so doing he protests against the infringement on his right for the protection of legal interests.

Repressions Against Journalists Pick Up Speed

“Procuracy indicts me for insulting an official. They claim that by alleged defamation I hindered that very official to carry out his duties at the post. In reality, I never insulted Vladimir Pashkevich, who opened legal action against me, let alone prevented him from doing his official services,” – said Alexander Ignatouk – editor-in-chief of “Vecherny Stolin” newspaper, whom they charged with insulting the head of the local executive.

Authorities Permit May 22 Trade Union Rally

Minsk authorities allowed the Belarusian trade union of car-building and agricultural machinery to hold their meeting in the city on May 22, reads the letter, which deputy head of the Minsk city hall Mikhail Petrushin sent on May 16 to the leader of the trade union Alexander Bukhvostov. As requested by the organizers of the event, the meeting “No to nation’s final impoverishment!” will take place at 4.30-6p.m. in the “50 Years of October” park. Its stated goal is to demand from the government cancellation of decisions, restricting the growth of salaries at the industrial enterprises.

Moldavian Defense Minister Sets Off for Minsk

Moldavian Defense Minister, brigade general Viktor Gaichuk will pay an official visit to Belarus on May 21-22. “The Minister’s visit’s agenda includes meetings with representatives of the military agency of Belarus, in course of which the sides will concentrate on various aspects of the bilateral cooperation in the military sphere and the perspectives of its enlargement,” – reports the Moldavian Defense Ministry’s press-service.

Pavel Borodin Scares Nations with Autumn Referendum

Referendum on the formation of the “union state” of Russia and Belarus may occur in November-December, 2003. “Rosbalt” correspondent quotes the secretary of the union Pavel Borodin as saying that at the Friday meeting with the journalists of the “Literaturnaya Gazeta”. According to Borodin, 99% of the countries’ population will vote in favor of the merger. Presidents will agree on the terms of holding referendum in late June-early July 2003, forecasts Borodin, who had tried to do some date-setting before too, but his guesses had always proven wrong.

One hundredth of a percent – namely so many shares of the Novopolotsk oil refinery “Polimir” will be owned by the company’s labor crew following the termination of a privileged sale of stock. The right for a cheaper purchase of shares belonged to the workers of the company, pensioners, who retired from it as well as former workers with a working record of no less than ten years for males and seven – for females.
