Salvation Army
13:17, 23/05/2003, Nikolai KHALEZIN

Free press can either be good or bad, that’s right.
But that which is not free, can never be good for sure.
Alber Kamu

Spring, which has long commenced in the country, doesn’t make its residents any happier – too many emotions are wasted on the dissatisfaction with the authorities and poor living standards. Belarusians are moved to feelings not but the sunlight and fresh air but by soaring public utilities tariffs and weird statements of the head of state, voiced by him on TV or radio. Their desire to replace the authorities and start life anew become irresistible. Two traditional questions now have to be answered: “Who’s guilty?” and “What should be done?” Answering the first one, the society split into two halves. Some put all the blame on the head of the regime, while others blast opposition for the lack of willpower and amateurishness. Interestingly, both opinions are articulated by those, who, to a great degree, bear responsibility for it – journalists.
Let me put it plain right away that I myself belong to this profession and, therefore, share the guilt and responsibility of the journalistic community.

Last days’ events testify to the cool-down in relations between the official Minsk and Moscow. Upon Russia’s initiative, the June 2-3 session of the parliamentary assembly of the “union” will be put off. Official Minsk sources claim that they haven’t yet received any official telegram on the matter. Meantime, the head of the parliamentary assembly’s representation in Belarus Nikolai Kontsevoi heard nothing of the postponement. “This isn’t related to the acuteness of relations or any other problems. It is purely a technical issue,” – he says.
