Yakub Kolas Lyceum Under Threat of Closure

Vladimir Kolos won’t be possible left the head of the Belarusian Humanitarian Lyceum. On May 27 the Minister of education Petr Brigadin told Vladimir Kolos about his intention to appoint new director of the Lyceum. The Minister proposed to Kolos to remain at the deputy director’s post. “I said that I have a negative attitude to it, which violates the previous agreements on my status in the Lyceum and might as well violate the essence of the pedagogical atmosphere in the Lyceum. Because this Lyceum was set up by me and my colleagues,” – Radio Ratsya quotes him as saying.

Meningitis Hampers "Ratusha`s" Case Consideration

The court of the Leninsky district of Grodno delayed for an unlimited period consideration of a complaint of the chairman of the Grodno regional public association “Ratusha” Alexander Milinkevich over the administrative commission. The reason for the case consideration’s postponement was the fact that defender, official from the Leninsky district commission Radchenko-Yurechko fell ill with meningitis, whose scare now haunts the Grodno town.

BAJ Denounces Intensification of Repressions Against Free Media

The Belarusian Association of Journalists passed on May 27 a statement in connection with the intensification of persecution of independent media and journalists. Five non-state editions are on the edge of shutdown – “Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta”, “BDG: For Confidential Use”, “Narodnaya Volya”, “Vecherny Stolin”, “Navinky”. The Ministry of information issued official reprimands to these periodicals, which can serve as grounds to close them all.

Signature Collection Motion in ZUBR’s Support Underway in Norway

Protest campaign against human rights abuses in Belarus was initiated by the activists of the human rights organization “Amnesty International”. A group of human rights watchdogs started collecting signatures among the Oslo University students, who are proposed to sign an appeal to the Belarusian authorities with a demand to halt repressions against ZUBR activities. All those, who take interest in the issue, are provided by the Norwegian human rights defenders with the detailed information on human rights violations in Belarus.

"Izvestia" Journalist Reprimanded

Head of the Foreign Ministry’s information department Andrei Savinykh summoned yesterday the special “Izvestia” correspondent Elena Daneiko and accused her over violation of the Law on press. Savinykh informed Daneiko about the official FM’s position concerning the Friday article “Lukashenko offended”, dedicated to the slowdown of the Russian-Belarusian integration. Elena Daneiko was told that now she is “in a complex situation”. However, she will not stand trial.

Number of Companies Operating at a Loss Exceeds 47%

Profitability level in the national economy of Belarus constitutes 7,5%, whereas the number of unprofitable companies rose over 47%, said the Minister of economy of Belarus, Vice-Premier Andrei Kobyakov at the government presidium’s meeting.
