Journalism Faculty at “Modern Knowledge Institute” Liquidated 11:21, 01/07/2003, Radio Svaboda
In Belarus they not only suspend publication of independent newspapers and deport foreign TV correspondents. The dismissed professors of the Institute of modern knowledge assert that upon Alexander Lukashenko’s order they annihilated the very system of the non-state journalistic education.
From this Monday on all employees of the journalism department of the independent Institute turned into unemployed. The faculty was headed by Ludmila Osinskaya, also including Igor Osinsky and Eduard Melnikov. The latter is also the vice-president of the Belarusian Association of Journalists.
According to Melnikov, last December Alexander Lukashenko, when paying his visit to the ONT and CTV offices entitled his officials to check out the system of independent journalistic education and its compliance with the state educational standards.
“The state embarked on a cleansing policy not only in mass media sphere, but also in non-state institutions, which are training journalists. Nobody needs free thinking journalists and the authorities are trying to make sure there are none of them on the country,” – said Melnikov.
