Parallel circulation of Russian ruble in the bank system, which Belarus planned to introduce on July 1, 2003, is put off, BelaPAN was told on June 30 by the chief of the information department of the National Bank Anatoly Drozdov. According to him, in order to carry out such a step one needs the permission of the head of state. However, the concomitant draft order of the president, prepared by the National Bank and coordinated with the structures of interest, hasn’t been signed yet.
Meanwhile, Drozdov underscored that both the payment system and the Belarusian banks are ready for such a move. In order to ensure cashless transactions in Russian ruble in Belarus the National Bank worked out the automatic system of inter-bank payments RUBISS.
At his last press-conference in late July in Minsk the head of the National Bank’s board Petr Prokopovich stated that the parallel circulation of the cashless Russian ruble is beneficial for the Belarusian economic entities. “We have thoroughly examined the problem… There are no negative aspects for companies there – they will only benefit from that,” – said back then the country’s chief banker.
