Polish Foreign Minister: relations between EU and Belarus will not improve 17:15, 02/07/2003, Radio Svaboda
At the international conference in Warsaw, dedicated to EU relations with new neighboring countries, the Foreign Minister of Poland Vladzemer Zimashevich stated that EU must make it clear to Belarus that given it complies with certain concrete demands, it may hope to become EU partner and even member in future.
“Belarus is a European country and its future is European too. Everything depends solely on the government of this country and the choice, made by the Belarusian nation. Now, of course, nobody can be satisfied with what’s happening in this country, but we got to manifest our support to all those, striving for reforms and civil society in Belarus. We have to show to Belarusians that they still have a chance”, said Zimashevich.
Meantime, says the Foreign Minister, one shouldn’t do anything, that could be used by the official Minsk as a sign of EU alleged support of the current Belarusian state system and policy.
The Foreign Minister of Poland also underlined that he doesn’t think that in the near future the Polish or EU-Belarusian bilateral relations will grow any better.
