National Lyceum to Go Shut for 2 Years 14:26, 21/07/2003, Radio Svaboda
Minsk city hall officials reported that the building of the National Humanities Lyceum would be shut down for the period of 1,5-2 years. The Lyceum students’ parents don’t lose hope to find money for the construction works, so that their children could start the new academic year in their regular institution.
On July 18 the parents of Lyceum students paid visit to the Minsk city hall in order to find out how long the repair works will last. The officials declined to let them familiarize themselves with an official order on construction, only noting that it’ll take them no less than two years to get things accomplished.
The parents deem that the authorities simply concocted the idea of the repair works in order to annihilate the Lyceum once and for all.
- We haven’t attained our objectives, that is to preserve the professors’ board, headed by Vladimir Kolas, and keep the students’ team from falling apart. A danger remains that they might get scattered in various schools. By so doing they will destroy the very spirit of our Lyceum, for it poses most lethal danger to the current leadership,” – stated member of the parental board Vladimir Gudkov.
For the time being, when the liquidation commission is at work at the Lyceum’s premises, no construction works are being implemented. However, the teachers fear for the textbooks, which they had been collecting for a few years and for their library.
On July 21 the Lyceum’s parents and teacher will convene at a parent’s assembly for a brain-storming on what they should do about the problem.
