Charter`97 Embarks on a “Free Internet” Action
15:33, 14/08/2003, Vital Tsygankov, "Radio Svaboda"

This week Charter’97 civil initiative opened its campaign “Free Internet”. “Literally a few steps separate the society from complete information blockade,” – reports Charter’s press-center: “We assume that one of such steps will be an attempt to shut the Belarusian users’ access to the “dangerous” Internet resources – news sites, electronic versions of free media, sites of opposition parties and movements and amateurish projects on Europe’s last dictator. So, Charter’97 believes that everyone must be ready to act under conditions of intensified pressure on part of the authorities. The goal of the “Free Internet” project is to present independent information on Belarus to all, seeking it in Internet. I contacted for more details on the matter Charter’97 activist Oleg Bebenin. Is the potential denial of access to opposition sites is so serious and imminent?

The Belarusian authorities are drafting a presidential decree “On the system of state organizations, carrying out ideological activities”. The Wednesday meeting of the head of state with his Cabinet was dedicated to this document, reports RIA “Novosti” correspondent. “Ideology for the state is what the immune is for a human being, so it is quite logical that the issues of ideological work are considered at the very top level,” – underscored Alexander Lukashenko opening the meeting.

Following the statement, voiced by Vladimir Putin, that ruble will turn into a Belarusian currency unit in January 2005 (ushering in the true unification of Russia and Belarus), Alexander Lukashenko determined to strengthen the people’s national conscience and identity. He signed a decree “On the system of state bodies and other organizations, carrying out ideological work in the Republic of Belarus”. Now in all labor teams there will be introduced the posts of chief ideologists, while all the country’s universities will teach a new discipline “Fundamentals of the Belarusian state ideology”.
