"Legal Aid to the Population" Pleads for Protection 11:54, 19/08/2003
The public association “Legal aid to the population” spread its appeal, pleading with the country’s public organizations and citizens to contact the Justice Minister Viktor Golovanov with a request to withdraw his claim on the liquidation of the human rights watchdog organization.
On August 2 the “Legal aid to the population” received a letter from the Minsk city court, reading that the court is now considering legal action on the liquidation of the public association, instituted by the Minsk city hall, recalls BelaPAN news agency.
“The state unleashed an unprecedented campaign of suppressing the civil society structures and free press,” – reads the statement of the “LAP” – “The government is persecuting the human rights organizations, monitoring human rights violations and providing population with the legal defense”. In this light the leadership of “LAP” pleads with other associations and the country’s population in general “to remind the government of Belarus of its commitment to protect human rights”.
