The agreement, stipulating the suspension of the construction of a stadium at the ancient Jewish cemetery in Grodno, was signed on Monday by the Grodno region governor Vladimir Savchenko and president of the Jewish religious association in Belarus Yuri Dorn.
“Under the reached agreement, starting from August 19 there will be halted all the construction works on erecting the sports ground in Grodno. The land, which had been brought from there earlier on, will be returned to the place of burials, where the Jewish religious association now intends to install and memorial sign there,” – “Interfax” quotes Yuri Dorn as saying.
Last week the religious Jews picketed the diplomatic compounds of Belarus in New York and Washington, as well as the Belarusian embassy in Israel in protest against the construction of a soccer field.
Around 14thsd people had been buried at the Jewish graveyard in Grodno, including some famous rabbis.
