Ideology Made Part of Academic Curriculum
12:00, 20/08/2003, Maryana Duntseva, BDG

On September 1 all Belarusian students will start studying the new subject “Fundamentals of Belarusian state ideology”. The youth will have to learn by heart all the national values and ideas, which remain unclear both for the scholars and the supreme leadership of the country.

The special course in ideology, which has already been called “brain-washing” by the Belarusian students, has been developed in course of only four months by representatives of a special ideology department, organized by the presidential Academy of governance. The subject will be made obligatory for studying in both state and commercial universities.

A typical academic curriculum includes 20 lectures and 16 seminars. Before getting into the studies, it got approved by the presidential Administration, although, say the professors, the program’s theses are of a too general character.

At the end of a semester the students will have to pass an exam in the new subject, despite the fact that the first textbook on ideology will appear no sooner than by December. One can only guess what its contents will be like. As for now, the students are recommended to use Alexander Lukashenko’s speeches, textbooks on political science and legislative acts as their main educational tools.
