Scholar of a world’s renown, former rector of the Gomel Medical University, professor Yuri Bandazhevsky has served his third year behind bars. Despite the proclaimed amnesty, the Committee for punishments of the Interior Ministry doesn’t say whether they will amnesty the imprisoned professor, sentenced to 8 years of jail for alleged bribery.
The spouse of the convicted professor Galina Bandazhevskaya, professor of medicine, had to quit job in the Gomel Medical University last year, and move over to Minsk, closer to her husband and relatives.
Her junior daughter Natalya Bandazhevskaya also moved with her mom to Minsk. Now she finished the Lyceum’s eighth grade.
The elder daughter Olga, just as her parents, is a professional physician. She married her University group-mate and lives and works in Gomel. Although she and her husband are living in their parents’ apartment, officers of the local Committee for punishments from time to time call in at their place for a check-up.
Sometimes they receive permission to meet their father and husband Yuri Bandazhevsky in jail. The man does his best to encourage the family.
“Our father tells us to cheer up and believe in the best: everything will be fine, he says, and truth will win. However, I see how hard it is for him to serve his prison term,” – says his elder daughter.
Letters of encouragement from France, England and Italy are oftentimes sent to the Bandazhevsky’s family post address. Both scholars and various public organizations write to the professor’s family. Even children are sending their pictures to the convicted professor.
