Lyceum Opens Outdoors
15:16, 03/09/2003, Lubov Luneva, Radio Svaboda

The students and teachers of the National Humanities Lyceum of Yakub Kolas continue assembling for studies under open sky. None of the officials of the Committee for education attended the territory, adjacent to the “Dynamo” stadium, where 130 schoolchildren have their studies in an improvised classroom.

Regardless of the unfavorable weather conditions, the children treat their studies under open sky with all seriousness. They carefully listen up to their teachers and pose questions to them. Famous writer and “Bible’s” translator Vasil Semukha is teaching them German literature. Today he decided to deliver a lecture on ancient Jewish poetry in modern translations of books “Solomon’s Proverbs”, “Ekklesiast” and “The Book of Job”. The students listened to the lecture with great attention and interest, being all ears.

The teacher expressed his indignation over the fact that most Minskers don’t really care about the fate of their Lyceum.

Later in the day the schoolchildren and their teachers went to visit museums. It has long become their tradition to attend various museums on September 2 each year. On the following day, according to a different tradition, the children will travel to Zelenoye village to play sports there.

To sum it up, today 130 pupils of the Lyceum have to study outdoors. The teachers assured the parents that they would be teaching their kids no matter what and regardless of any weather conditions.

The Belarusian authorities haven’t yet cancelled home studies, which are legitimate as long as the children successfully pass examinations at the end of the year. One can’t rule out a possibility that the pupils’ parents may submit a concomitant application for that too.
