Belarusians Abroad Align Themselves with Lyceum’s Protection Motion 15:40, 15/09/2003
The “Union of Belarusians abroad”, registered in Prague, is carrying out in the Czech Republic a wide information campaign on the protection of the Belarusian Humanities Lyceum. The organization’s members held a number of meetings with the political and public figures of the Czech Republic, where they informed them about the ongoing situation with the Belarusian language and schools in Belarus. Concomitant letters were sent to the Czech president Vatslav Klaus and Senate’s spokesman Petr Pitgart.
“The protection of the Belarusian Humanities Lyceum is a national affair. Not a single Belarusian, if he thinks of his future, cannot stay aside from the events, unfolding around this educational institution. Everyone realizes well the significance of the Belarusian school and education in the upbringing of the new generation,” – reads the organization’s press-release.
The Union’s activists received a response from the Senate’s chairman Pitgart. In particular, he writes:
“Let me respond to the letter, which you sent me with a request to support the students, their parents and professors of the Belarusian Humanities Lyceum in Minsk, whose existence is endangered this days. I will pass over your plea to the senators, as well as the Senate’s concomitant committees to keep them informed.”
