Oleg Volchek, the leader of the public association “Legal Assistance to Population”, liquidated by the Minsk city court on September 8, was beaten yesterday at his organization’s office in Very Horuzhei str.23 in Minsk. When Volchek left his car, he was approached by an unknown man, who started insulting him. The human rights defender tried to ignore his insults, but the offender punched him a few times in the face, supposedly with a knuckleduster, leaving severe wounds on his face. According to the victim, “the punches were professional, as of a boxer’s”. Oleg Volchek was immediately delivered to the hospital, where they put seams on his wounds. The criminal was gone. At present, he is searched for by the Central district police station of Minsk.
“I don’t rule out a possibility of provocation, as far as opposition activists are oftentimes beaten today in an open street,” – Said Volchek in an interview to the Charter’97.
