At the beginning of the week some graffiti with the contact numbers of the pagers and the slogan “Long live Belarus!” were painted on some central streets of the city. Leaflets with the logo of the movement were posted on Skaryna Avenue, Partizans’ Avenue and in the suburbs.
OSCE is holding a two-weeks’ conference on human rights and democracy in Warsaw. The core issue of the conference is the liquidation by the judicial organs of some non-governmental organizations in Belarus.
Alyaksandar Lukashenka made today the following statement in his speech addressed to the officials, “Do not believe that Lukashenka gave a command to kidnap these opposition leaders. Never! If I told you how long I had been working with these opposition activists, who were kidnapped, how many times I had warned Viktar Hanchar and others! He was detained, and some sacks with money were taken out of his car. I said, “Viktar, you must understand that you’ll loose your head. It is not your money, you haven’t earned it, you were given it. You should work for it.”
Andrei Sannikaw, the international coordinator of Charter’97, a member of the Council of the democratic block “Free Belarus”, paid a visit to the United States of America. During his visit a number of meetings were held at the State Department, the Congress, the Senate, a number of human rights’ defending organizations and at the offices of the largest American newspapers “The New York Times” and “The Washington Post”. Andrei Sannikaw also met with the leading American analytics, some of them represented the Heritage Foundation, and with a famous political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski. The main topic of discussions during these meetings was the situation in Belarus.
