Belarus courts hear 22,032 property confiscation cases Jan-Sep.
12:56, 14/11/2003, Prime-TASS News

Belarus` arbitrage courts heard 22,032 cases of bankruptcy and economic violations entailing confiscation of property in January-September, up 25% on the year, the chairman of Belarus` Supreme Arbitrage Court Victor Kamenkov told the plenary meeting of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament late Wednesday.

The courts ruled that property worth 40.4 billion rubles be seized in 1,209 cases, while so far, a total of 8.8 billion Belarusian rubles has been seized relating to 605 of the cases.
"Property confiscation is only carried out following a corresponding court ruling, and not on the orders of the president, as some members of parliament believe", Kamenkov said.

The number of property disputes connected with payment for goods and services, as well as with reparation of loss and tax collection increased 30.19% on the year in January-September to 20,278 cases.

The number of appeals rose 31% on the year in the period to 660 cases. As a result, the number of overturned court rulings increased 65% on the year to 108 instances.
The total number of cases filed with arbitrage courts went up 19% on the year to 29,823. "We expect the number to reach 40,000 by the end of the year", Kamenkov said. (2,134 Belarusian rubles - U.S. $1)
