Sharamet Finds Unexpected Recommencement of Zavadski’s Disappearance Investigation 17:29, 18/12/2003
The head of the department of ORT special projects, a famous TV journalist Paval Sharamet called the sudden recommencement of the investigation of his friend and colleague Zmicer Zavadski’s disappearance “surprising”. He said that in his interview to the “Pahonya” correspondent.
He sees two possible reasons of this step of the Belarusian authorities. The first is the recommencement on formal reasons, after the visit of special PACE political committee reporter Christos Pourgourides to Belarus.
- In this case nothing new can be expected, only demonstration of the recommenced investigation by the authorities, -- Sharamet believes.
The second possible reason could be the wish of the Belarusian authorities to finish these cases finally, also in the minds of the citizens, “legalizing” the bodies of the murdered oppositionists, including Zmicer Zavadski.
- It is absolutely possible that among ‘them’ the opinion that disappeared without a trace are a wound that cannot heal in the memory of the society and an ineffaceable blemish on Lukashenka’s reputation. And after the bodies would be found and buried, the community and relatives of the disappeared would see the case as closed. The authorities counted that it would happen after the court trial against Ihantovich and his group. But it was not justified, because the court was closed and the guilt of Ihnatovich was not established perfectly, and not proved at all in the case of Zavadski, in my opinion. Now they prepare even more radical steps”, -- believes Sharamet.
The guilt in Zavadski’s murder would be to ascribed to Ihnatovich and Malik, who have already been found guilty of his kidnapping by the court and sentenced to life imprisonment, despite of the fact that no information on Zavadski’s fate were heard in the court.
