Virus kills 37,000 pigs in Belarus 17:24, 24/12/2003
An outbreak of a viral disease reduced the 90,000 livestock of the Barysawski pig farm near Barysaw by 37,000 as of 22 December. The damage done to one of Minsk Region`s largest pig-breeding centres is estimated at around 2bn roubles (930,000 dollars), Syarhey Charnukha, deputy chief of the Barysaw district government`s agriculture department, told Belapan.
Experts at the Belarusian Research Institute for Animal Breeding have established that the barns at the farm have been used for 29 years although the service limit is 10 years. As a result, the premises have become a persistent source of bacterial pollution, which is five to 10 times higher than the permissible level.
The remaining pigs are currently being transported to other farms of the district, Charnukha said. The barns need to be renovated and disinfected, according to experts.
