The Belarusian authorities have not received the official document of the European commission on the beginning of investigation of trade union rights in Belarus – said press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andrei Savinykh to Radio Svaboda.

“We Remember” Action Participant to Be Under Trial In Barysaw

The trial on the participant of the action “We remember”, Zubr activist Alyaksandar Monich is to take place on January 9 in Barysaw. Monich was arrested on December 10 last year for his participation in the action in remembrance of missing Belarusian politicians. The young man is accuse of violating article 167 part 1 of the Administrative Code (violation of the order of organizing and carrying out meetings, protest marches, demonstrations and picketing). If Monich will be found guilty he can be sentenced to a fine or administrative arrest lasting from 3 to 15 days. On December,10 another 7 participants were detained together with Monich. Their cases are to be considered by an administrative commission.

The majority of Minsk dwellers participated in a poll (53%) are against lifting the constitutional limitation for one person to be the president of Belarus more than two terms consecutively. This opinion was expressed during a public opinion poll carried out by a sociological service “Zerkalo” of the informational agency “BelaPAN” in December 2003.
