Former Tractor Plant Director to Serve Time In Minsk Colony 15:37, 09/01/2004
On January 8 the former director of Minsk tractor plant Mikhail Lyavonaw was transferred from pre-trial solitary confinement cell to a Minsk colony, where he is to serve the remaining eight years of detention he was sentenced to by the Supreme court of Belarus.
By the court decision Lyavonaw is to compensate the money “stolen”, but nobody knows what happen if he they would not be paid back. Lyavonaw had about 12 thousand dollars at his money account in one of Minsk banks. The court also ruled to confiscate his car Chrysler that costs about the same sum. Some thousands dollars more can be obtained by officers of the court through confiscation of things and furniture from his apartment. In any case it would amount to less than 30 thousands dollars.
The court also judged to arrest the accounts in foreign banks belonging to the wife and daughters of Lyavonaw. It is about 600 thousands dollars, but it is unknown how to return these money to Belarus. Meanwhile, Lyavonaw and his relatives assert that they have no foreign accounts and never had.
