Another Letter Of AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
12:28, 15/01/2004

Yesterday a group of a well-known international human rights organization AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL sent a letter to Alyaksandar Lukashenka.

Dear president,

Please allow us to draw again, for the first time this year, your attention to the case of people of your country, members of the opposition, who `disappeared`. It is clear that not only we, this group of Amnesty International in the Netherlands, but also instances of the European Union f.i. and of course several groups within Belarus itself, are dealing with this case and won’t stop asking for the truth.

It seems to us quite natural that this is done, because a normal human being should understand that its case simply of justice and humanity. And the questions asked to you mean a question about the motives of the policy of your regime.

Of course it gives a very strange impression that until now your government refused to give any cooperation to any investigation into the fate of the men who disappeared. We again urge you to change your attitude and answer the questions we mean, in behalf of the relatives of these men and because justice is so very important, not only for the world outside Belarus.

Let’s hope that during this year 2004 there will be not only more recruitment of freedom in your country but also signs of hope that your endeavour and that of other people and instances shall not be in vain.

Regretfully yours, on behalf of our group

J.D.B. v.d. Meulen
