Lyceum’s Day in the Street outdoors :: Charter'97 :: News

On January 15 of the Jakub Kolas National Humanities Lyceum celebrates the 14th anniversary of its foundation. For 13 years this celebration was held in the building of the Lyceum without any hindrances and was accompanied by impressive performances, various photo exhibitions, concerts and a well-known research-and-practice conference. However in summer 2003 it happened that a number of distressing events were disturbing the Lyceum. The authorities took away the building of the Lyceum and liquidated it, though they failed to destroy it.

Girls and boys together with their professors continued studies first in the streets, and later in conditions of underground. Studies are continued now due to contributions. Lyceum students were struggling throughout summer and autumn, carrying out street actions and picketing by the building, writing a number of appeals and statements asking for support. Some mass media nominated them as heroes of the year. They have not betrayed their Lyceum and now celebrate another birthday of their alma mater.

On January 14 a festive meeting took place. All students and their guests gathered for the event. On January 15 students invite everybody for a concert. In case of success the concert will be held in the building in Kirau Str. 21, otherwise it will start in the street. After that students plan to go out to the Skaryna Avenue and have a symbolic festive street rally in support of the Lyceum.
