Jakov Gutman, president of the World Association of Belarusan Jewry went on hunger strike as a protest against the policy of creeping state anti-Semitism, informs human rights center “Viasna”.
As we have informed already, Jakov Gutman was arrested on January 14 by police for holding an unsanctioned picket in Minsk in front of the Presidential Administration. Jakov Gutman tried to unfurl a poster reading: "“Mr. Lukashenka, please stop destruction of Jewish sacred places, cemeteries, and memorials!” He was taken to the city department of police for identification and clarification of motives of his actions. On the same day the court issued an official warning to him. Jakov Gutman believes that it is important to protest against manifestations of anti-Semitism conducted by the Belarusian authorities.
