Kasyanov Brings Pressure Upon Sidorsky 14:26, 16/01/2004
The deadline for concluding an agreement on the introduction of the Russian ruble in Belarus as the uniform payment unit will expire in February, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov told Interfax on Friday ahead of his talks with Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky.
"This is the deadline for signing all agreements and sending them to the parliaments," said Kasyanov.
"Specialists estimate that the chances for introducing a single currency by January 1, 2005 will expire in February," he added.
Earlier reports said that in February, this issue would be discussed by the Russian-Belarusian "Union State`s" supreme state council.
Another important issue to be discussed on Friday is the establishment of a joint gas pipeline company in Belarus, and the conclusion of deals to supply Russian gas to Belarus and to other countries through Belarus.
"We hope for progress in these areas," the Russian prime minister said.
