Part of “Mestnaya Gazeta” Pressrun Confiscated 12:01, 19/01/2004
On January 16 tax police confiscated rest of newspapers and money from private vendors of independent newspaper “Mestnaya Gazeta”.
Three inspectors acme to each of the salespersons and ordered not to sell this newspaper any longer. The vendors were taken to tax police office; the reports relating disobedience to rules of retail trade have been drawn up there. The inspectors referred to an order by the Smarhon regional executive committee. Though on January 15 the “Mestnaya Gazeta” editorial office received an approved list of newspapers for sale (assortment inventory), where the newspaper had not been crossed out, owner of the “Mestnaya Gazeta” Ramuald Ulan told “Radio Svaboda”.
Ramuald Ulan underlines that according to the legislature on trade, assortment inventory is the key document for vendors. However, tax inspection follows the order of the executive committee, prohibiting retail sale of the newspaper “Mestnaya gazeta”. Now the reports are to be directed to administrative court.
It is not the first attempt of the authorities to hinder distribution of the local independent newspaper. Last year police arrested vendors of independent press and confiscated rest of the pressrun.
