“Narodnaya Volya” is a subject to a 100 million fine 16:16, 28/01/2004
As the editors’ office of the independent Belarusian newspaper “Narodnaya Volya” found out, on January 15 two suits were submitted to Leninsky court of Minsk from OAO “Alliance-media”, the founder of the newspaper “The Observer”, and Sergey Atroschenko, the editor-in-chief. Each suit asks for the penalty of 50 million rubles, as the Belarusian Association of Journalists reports. The reason for the suits is two articles published in the newspaper.
“Narodnaya Volya” has already lost one suit on protection of honor and business reputation to the head of Belteleradiocompany Egor Rybakov. On November 17 Minsk City court fined “Narodnaya Volya” for 50 million rubles and journalist Maryna Koktysh and former TV hostess Eleanora Ezerskaya for 3 million rubles for the compensation of moral damage caused to Rybakov. The reason for the verdict was an article published 2 years before that.
OAO “Alliance-media”, Sergey Atroschenko’s, the Belteleradiocompany head’s suits can lead to the total bankruptcy of the only independent daily in Belarus.
