Belarus to stop electric power imports 13:46, 30/01/2004, www.russiajournal.com
Belarus is going to switch to its own power-supply sources starting February, abandoning its traditional suppliers of electric power, Russia and Lithuania, completely. This was announced today by Belenergo concern head Sergey Bely at the meeting of the Belarusian Ministry of Energy board.
“No contracts for 2004 with any suppliers have been signed, we only have an agreement for deliveries for January”, Bely said. “Energy, offered by external suppliers is more expensive than generation of our own energy on mazut”, he explained.
Nevertheless, Belarus is not going to give up energy imports altogether, in order to ensure its energy security. “We will consider this problem carefully”, Bely noted, according to Izvestia.
