Belarus stops import of RF electricity from February 12:01, 03/02/2004, ITAR-TASS
Belarus stopped import of Russian electricity from February, spokeswoman for the Fuel and Energy Ministry Liliya Dulenets told Itar-Tass on Monday. A decision to this effect was conditioned by the RAO EES Rossii intention to increase prices for electricity. Belenergo representatives are holding talks with Russian officials to reach agreement on reducing tariffs.
According to the ministry, now Belarus has enough electrical power to meet its own electricity needs. On February 1, Belarus’ electrical power was increased from 4,800 megawatt to 5,300 megawatt.
Last year Belarus imported 7.59 billion kilowatt/hour of electricity, which is 0,800 billion kilowatt/hour more than in 2002. Russia exported 3,500 billion kilowatt/hour to Belarus and Lithuania 4,090 billion kilowatt/hour. This year Lithuania is expected to supply up to four billion kilowatt/hour to Belarus.
